Me and my mom have that relationship where we are insanely mean to eachother in like a joke way. So when friends come over and me and her are cussing eachother out and start laughing everyone just looks at each other awkwardly.

Well, he described a baby as a parasite (a common refrain of the really pro-choice people) and the bit about said racist jokes.  My brain works that way sometimes.  I'm a super ball in a labyrinth.

Really pro-choice people, also people who watch House and have a sense of humour.

Racist jokes don't quite denote racism.

Racists are usually not at all jokey about their beliefs.

Yeah, when you describe a baby as a parasite, my first thought isn't Hugh Laurie.

And your story made it out to be quite the serious topic. So, levity wasn't the first thing on my mind.

It is a serious enough subject, but no one in my family is very serious about anything, so it was all sarcasm and jokes.

Well, I didn't understand your family dynamic.

If somebody in my family said that to somebody in the family who was pregnant, one of the others would be liable to knock their damn teeth out.

That sounds like an unfortunate level of family tension.

No, we take babies very seriously. You show that level of disrespect to a future member of the family, you be damn sure we'd have a problem with it.  Honor is what keeps a family together.  Without it, you might as well be acquaintances.

You confuse humour with disrespect.

My family is rife with sarcasm and ribbing, but rush to aide one another in times of trouble with a ferocity to rival that of a rabid bear.

Judging by how seriously and awkwardly your family seems to handle situations, they fall in to that acquaintance category you speak of.

I know that the only people I am that starchy with are those who I only slightly know.

You probably should have made that clear.

Is your pregnant sister in a committed relationship/married?

Why does that matter? XD

A bebeh is a bebeh, every family is going to respond to that news differently. Honestly, a foetus isn't going to be offended whether you call it a parasite or not. :P

Well, it would illuminate whether the "whore" remarks were jest or something else entirely.

Desire for honor broke my family apart. Loyalty is more important, but I think understanding and acceptance works best. It's why my brother, sister, and I haven't yet fallen apart when the rest of the family has.
I honestly can't stand babies, but since I understand and accept that it's not their fault I won't hurt them. haha

Honour, loyalty...I didn't know we were a bunch of Samurai now. What a load of outdated twallop.

I'm so done with a lot of my family's shite.

You probably should have made that clear.

Is your pregnant sister in a committed relationship/married?

Yeah I suppose if you aren't accustomed to the way my family works we would all seem like snippy dark humoured dinks.

She was in a relationship with a guy and had been for a while, then they broke up, then she found out she was pregnant.

So there is that whole fun ball of awesome to add to the situation.

Good thing my family handles stress like a porn star handles titties.

Like champs.

And I'm pretty sure "love" is what holds a family together.

Love comes in many forms.

No one in my family really outright says that they love each other, we all just sort of know it and understand.

Like when you see another guy walking down the street and he is wearing the same shoes as you, then you make eye contact and do the nod.

That guy fucking gets you on an unspoken level and would probably defend you in a fight now based on that alone.

Which is how my family operates.

I actually get a bit of a headache from friend's families who are all touchy feely tell each other they love each other every time they end a phone conversation people.

I spent a good time of my life thinking that until a few people took advantage of my willingness to trust people.

Honor and loyalty are very important to me, but loyalty is more a thing for friends than family.  Honor is something family has.  Well, Vin Diesel in Fast Four onward basically spells out what family is and why it is important so well.

She was in a relationship with a guy and had been for a while, then they broke up, then she found out she was pregnant.

Yeah, that's really not a good situation for both her and the ex-boyfriend.  If she ever tells him, what's the over/under on him pressuring her to abort the baby?  70/30?  (The 30 being split between two other answers, i.e. proposing out of requirement or straight up high-tailing it out of there.)

She told him as soon as she knew, and apparently he is cool with it.

So we will see where it all goes.
