On the whole job complaints thing, I'm there. I'm qualified for a variety of things; I can work behind a TV camera, I'm qualified as a professional video editor (effects etc), I have a degree in videogames design. What am I doing in order to stay alive? None of those things, that's what. The market for those jobs doesn't exist here, so until I move to a big city I've got no chance. But I don't bitch and moan like a prissy little schoolgirl whose daddy didn't buy her the right colour Porshe. I do a thankless, menial job because I need money to live. It's a shitty job, but I'd be in a shittier place without it. I'm certainly not making use of the information I learned in my time in education, but meh.

So I kept seeing new posts show up in this thread and thought to myself "Gee, Disney princess engagement rings must be a hot topic right now.".

Yet when I pop in to see what all the talk is about, all I see is William Styles informing everyone of how he is a special gem in a world of darkness.

 

It is easy to sit there and gripe about how shitty everything is and how unfair the job market can be.

I went to one of the best colleges in Canada for cabinetmaking and ended up working for about eight months in the field in a shop that was never going to bump my pay over $12/hour, even though my certifications required them by law to pay me a much higher wage. When that didn't work out, I slugged my way through life working in a kitchen and night cleaning for a good long while until my family started a business, which is what I am currently doing.

 

You think I didn't have a few days where I took a step back and got angry at how I was a grown ass man flipping burgers and scrubbing toilets instead of doing the job I went to school for, paid for out of pocket. There were more than a few.

 

I have met people like you before.

People who put themselves on a pedestal up above everyone else and refuse to take a step backward in order to build a foundation for them self.

Not willing to do what needs to be done to survive on their own because it would mean stepping down from the high point they think they deserve to stand, regardless of situation.

 

Maybe you should take a look around and see that there are countless people in exactly the same situation that you find yourself in.

I was explaining my problems.  I've been out of good work, as I define it, for nearly two years now.  Did I say I haven't had any job in the last two years?  No, specifically, I say I have had work.  It was just complete shit.

 

Assuming any of you know what I'm going through is a mighty big assumption on y'all's part.

I know girls with masters degrees and they are servers at a bar and Mexican grill.. Life doesn't owe you anything. If you want a jov in the field you studied then you need to find a career with a high need.. Like nursing.. Haven't you watched the pursuit of happiness?

I never said it did.  I was explaining my situation.  Which y'all apparently took as complaining.  There is a difference.

 

Fostering connections through networking is only truly useful once you're established.  Until you reach that point, connections are only worth while if you foster ones with people who are already themselves established. Those people tend not to network that often because they don't need to anymore.  Outside of former professors with industry experience outside of academia and/or a large Rolodex, this generally means former alumni of the university.  If they don't want to talk to you, you're shit out of luck for general networking outside of talking to random strangers.  Which rarely reaches the comfort level to hand over a business card.

 

The business world is tough.  I know that.  College entry-level (I have less than a year's experience, so entry-level is what I'm qualified for) job growth in America is terrible in any city or town with a reasonable rent.  Part of why the rent is reasonable is because fresh college graduates are not moving there in very large quantities because they're not getting jobs there.  Vicious cycle, supply and demand and all that.

 

The last two years have been instructive.  I've learned a lot.  But the stagnant economy around me hasn't made finding a good job anywhere near easy.  I didn't expect it to be.

Call me what you like, but there is a difference between stating your problems(in a thread that has nothing to do with your problems) and whining about how it is shitty not to be working in your field. We see what you are complaining about, relate to it since they are the same problems most of us experienced, and have perspective on. Not assumption.

 

You will have to forgive me for being crass about your problems, but I have a hard time caring about the somehow egotistical woes of someone who has contributed nothing positive to this forum. Nearly everything you say is in conflict of someone else's post, usually for no reason other than to give yourself a little stroke to your ego.

Except it is because you do not know me.  You assume you know my problems.

 

It's complicated.  I tried explaining the complicated part and y'all screamed at me for complaining about it.

(No, see I started by bringing up the fact that once I'm established, I'll be able to afford fancy things like a nice engagement ring.  Then it got into a whole "Why aren't you established yet?" conversation.  And then it devolved after I tried to explain my reasoning for my lack of establishment and y'all yelled at me for whining.  That's what you get for butting into the middle of a conversation that you weren't having and assuming you know how it arrived at the point it was.)

 

Funny how I'm crass about a crass topic and I get yelled at.  You add anger to a situation that didn't really have much until you posted your rant and you get indignant when I respond with "Why did you see the need to say those pretty damn hurtful but false things about me?"

 

I don't agree with you on many things.  That doesn't give you the leisure to treat me like a sub-human being.

And the co-worker I hate keeps going on about the diamond eternity ring her husband bought for her birthday, and it's just annoying. I get it, you're rich and don't actually need to work, shut up

Blood diamonds, the fact that Da Beers created a market for diamonds out of nothing, child (possibly slave) labor in the diamond mines of Africa, etc.

 

I'm all for lab-created stones.  They will only get cheaper and better with time.
