I have a male friend of 20 years of age who has never embraced the comic book multiverse and now he is looking to me to introduce him. I want to present him with a great starter selection that will get him hooked.

The problem is I don't know such a selection myself because when I first started out, I was reading indie and he very much enjoys the Superhero realm.

I would like to know what you guys recommend as a killer superhero selection that is suitable for an impressive introduction toward comic books.

I'm looking for classics and/or on going series.

Are there any "bad" Batman comics?

Batman #147: Bat Baby. Trust me, it's bad. Whatever you do, don't read it. I was trying to find the first Batman comic that introduced the Riddler, but I couldn't find it at the comic book store, so I found Bat Baby instead. I was heavily disappointed.

Wow, and I have an answer!

How bad was it? Also, how did they fuck up that concept? I presume Bruce got de-aged.

He was de-aged by a shrink ray. I thought it was bad just based on how awkward it was to have a grown Robin fighting alonside a tiny Batman. It just didn't make any sense.

So many missed opportunities!

  • Alfred getting to be mom to Tiny!Bruce
  • Bruce wandering into a villain's lair or just crossing paths, and, welp, guess Poison Ivy's a mom now
  • Robin babysitting as an awkward teen (or adult who just has no idea what to do), and has to figure out how to parent; hijinks ensue.
  • And then Alfred steps in because of course he does
  • Alfred having to splice together video footage of adult Bruce to show to some board meeting to make it look like everything's okay
  • Tiny Battoddler actually foiling a bank robbery or something by accident
  • To the Batbigwheel!

Like, this is off the top of my head! For fuck's sake!

That's clever. I didn't think about any of that. It didn't happen that way at all, but if any of it did, then I would have given that book much more credit than saying it was the worst.

This might sound crazy, but I have never read one single comic book in my life. I had access to them, but I always hated reading books ever since I had to take those stupid AR tests in elementary school.

That's rough; books are the best! Comic books doubly so.

If it's the reading specifically that gives you trouble, you could always look up some comic dubs on YouTube.

How awesome is it that these exist?

I had no idea those existed until now, which is surprising because I'm a big fan of audio books too.
