My friends and I are all fairly new to D&D. We've played about 5-8 sessions each. We decided to start an online campaign using roll20.net and I was chosen as the DM. I haven't been able to get my hands on a 5e DM's Guide, but I do have a PHB. Lately I've been trying to memorize all the rules of play (with the PHB) and designing the world in which our adventures will take place.

Do any, more experienced players have some advice for me? Do I need a DM's Guide? What mistakes can I avoid making? Basically, is there anything I should know before I start?

My brother used to DM (probably still does), and here are some things that he did:

-If we got out of hand, he had a Dragon Die which he would roll to summon a dragon which we would fight and gain NO exp from (we used to squabble a bit).

-He was very adaptable and flowing, allowing the action to take its course without imposing his own will too strongly.

-He was good at reading the atmosphere and knowing his fellow campaigners.

-He was very knowledgeable and as such, very very few times had to stop to check rules.

-He would refrain from calling someone "stupid" even if that's exactly what they were being.

-He would offer suggestions if someone looked like they were stuck, but not too often.

-Most importantly, our campaigns were always fun. Too much seriousness is just... no fun.

Don't be a prick*

Railroading can work depending on how the story is done. But being an asshole is the best way to get yourself a group of very angry adventurers.

i find that you need to try and not 'play out' to many situations in your head when planning enconters, as i've found they make me biased towards the solution i thought of for a problem, and i might (if only a little) punish adventurers that manage to think up better solutions.

and of course the moment you start picking them off with op traps the game is no longer fun ;D

I'll save this video now that I have a PS4. If I get around to picking up this game in the future, I'll need some tips.

I'm beginning to like Helen more than some of you 'humans' around here. If I ask her to show me her tits, think it'll reply with something?
