I spent the fall working for the university's computing help desk. They was phasing out XP on campus because of this and you wouldn't believe the amount of resistance people had to moving to Windows 7, especially older professors who had just learned how to use XP, they didn't want to move on. I had to listen to a lot of people call in and rant about how they didn't want Windows 7, they liked XP just fine. I felt pretty bad for them. XP was great but there's nothing I can do to let you keep it..

I just love the indignation people seem to have about it. Oh my god, they're no longer actively supporting something THIRTEEN YEARS OLD. How very dare they. Just because Microsoft isn't supporting it doesn't mean you instantly have to stop using it, it just means that you now have the final build. No more updates shutting your PC down, no more little changes to the UI or tweaks to resource/memory usage.

I wonder if I should be pissed off too? I have a Windows 98 gaming rig in the attic, but they don't support Windows 98. Maybe I should be mad.

Who runs xp now? You'd have to either buy an old copy of the os or be running a 10 year old computer.

Or a major company.  According to that article, nearly 25% of computers still run it.

Big companies like to use VPNs and virtual machines to keep things completely locked down. They're also not terribly interested in upgrading so you get millions of machines running XP.

This was pretty much my exact reaction. To the point where I was surprised that they had been until now.

This seems like an appropriate place to put this.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak for me.

For the record, the OSX equivalent is Cheetah, which ended support  quite a while back, along with Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard and most recently Snow Leopard, which was released in 2009.

Really good point. Microsoft is getting so much shit for this but they held on to XP for a really long time.

I do miss this guy though:

I figured. I just wanted to make a comparison so people could understand just how long XP has been supported.

It's not like they up and stopped supporting it out of no where. They've been saying this for years. It's time to move on.

Apple sucks (F**K the iTunes store,) Windows occasionally sucks, Google's computers are supremely underpowered, Amazon can see and predict everything you do, and Linux is far too complicated (no matter what my coding friends say.)

Where does that leave us?

I use a PC because Macs are far too expensive for what you get. I use Chrome because it's the best browser. Amazon's MP3 store is by far the best (although the much smaller Loudr is pretty cool.) And just f**k Linux.

You're forgetting the best one: Chrome OS.

...all jokes aside, Macs have by far the best operating system. It's a shame it's overpriced.

I switched from Windows 7 to Linux Mint a while back and have absolutely no issues so far.

My hatred for 7 is what made the final decision, which I had been entertainging for some time.

There is a slight learning curve when getting used to how it handles, but it is no different than if I were to plot down in front of a mac and try to get around the computer.

I am also not all that tech savvy as far as nerds go, so my being able to use a Linux based operating system without issue is testament to how user friendly it has become.
