I've been doing forums for quite a while. At one point I had one that was getting 500+ posts a day and had a ton of members, a lot of what I apply here is from mistakes I made there. The chat box was one of those things that seemed like a really awesome idea, but it almost instantly made an impact on the community interaction in a negative way. I don't enforce any sort of time between posts or anything like that, it's easy for someone to just go to the everything else forum and make a thread to discuss things, and it's there for a later time when someone else may have missed it in the chat box.

Honestly, I trust Spleen's opinion and experience.
I watched my favourite forum get eaten by Facebook, and it was a sad death.
I don't ever want to see that happen again.

The last forum I went to regularly was the one on coolrom.com
I'm actually not sure exactly what ended up shutting that forum down, but it hasn't come back since. It's sad, I miss those guys.
