I'm really into this new workout I found, called Steel MBS. It's a sword workout with a real sword...and yes, it actually works. Imagine larping but building muscle!

I get the feeling he isn't actually very good with a sword, hence the use of the flat of the blade (creating unnecessary air resistance and adding additional force required in his swings). Really, a wooden sword would do a better job until you're confident that you won't stab yourself with needlessly showboaty moves when using a real blade.

why is he slapping the air with the flat of the blade?

You're doing that very wrong man.

Come to think of it the air resistance might be the point of the workout.

Possibly. I suppose my main issue with it stems from the fact that I'm used to heavier swords; katanas and longswords mainly. Using the flats of them in a swing just... isn't recommended, it changes the way your body deals with the swing and is usually more dangerous for yourself than it would be for an opponent. Sure you could stun them with it, but the same effect could be accomplished by switching grip and using the pommel rather than the blade. You'd need to be closer but it removes the chance of unnecessary injuries to both parties, as well as providing a better guarantee at a stun/knock-out.
The point of a bladed weapon is that it cuts. Whether it be flesh, armour or air, it cuts. Like I said, a wooden sword would give much the same effect because they're usually designed somewhat thicker than their metal counterparts, so the resistance would still be there, but less noticeable.
I'm a bit concerned about the fact that his blade bends, or at least seems to. I've only ever encountered one sword with a blade that flimsy, and it was a Chinese sword specifically designed for cutting and therefore has some flexibility. Perhaps too much, since despite being sharp, I can bend the blade by pushing the tip against my palm >.>
I'm also pretty sure that the sword in the video is a Kit Rae, so calling it a real sword is a bit of a stretch.

I'd like to point out that most swords are made of a high carbon steel, something that's relatively rigid and by design of the sword itself, durable on one or two axis. Sideways like this, the blade is a lot thinner, and she shape is not as sturdy. Hitting anything with relative force would almost certainly bend a cheaper stainless blade, or snap a better carbon steel one.

That too.
And now you've reminded me of the time I snapped a katana. >.>

How'd you manage that?

I'm going to guess he/she blocked during sparring.

yeah, can't say I'd be willing to do that in public. Especially since that is an actual metal sword and I'd rather not get a visit from the cops for swinging it around in a public place.
with the way he is swinging it it seems like a kind of warhammer or polearm would probably work better to give you a work out, also you can't cut yourself on either.

Excessive use. It was just a display model so not really fit for what I was putting it through. After a while the blade started to move slightly, eventually I could move the base and have the tip of the blade move over an inch from side to side, and then because I'm ever so smart I snapped it out myself by wiggling it. xD

I am always a fan of new fitness methods, my dude (seriously, check the link in my sig), but posting the same short video in three different places on the forum and then pretending it isn't you in the video is kind of rude.

I almost took my sister's foot off playing with a katana once. Took a great chunk out of a ceiling as well.

With any weapon, you should always practice how you play...
(and by play, i mean how you kill with it)
