Anyhow, the last time I ever had a gaming console was when I had a Sega Genesis and the game Sonic The Hedgehog. That was way back in nineties when I was a kid.
Since then, I've periodically played random games when relatives would come down for the holidays and bring their consoles, but I haven't owned a console since I was a kid.
But, I would like to own a console now and get started back up in gaming. Which one should I buy? What games should I start out with first?
Who is who and what is what in the gaming industry?
Confusion abounds........

i've seen a few cases where a person bought a console strictly based off what they were told by friends/family only for them to realize the other suited their tastes more (most cases are people buying the 360 and being diehard rpg fans. good rpgs are slim pickins on the xbox >.>)

If you MUST have a console, I recommend PS3 for the exclusives
360 has a handful of good exclusives, but you'll find that alot of them are for PC also

xBox 360, its far better imo. PS3 is good, but it ends up costing alot more :/
If you are comparing used prices, yes
But with an Xbox, you have to factor in
-Cost of Hard Drive
-Cost of Wifi dongle
-Cost of Xbox Live Gold
-Cost of controller and battery packs [most used bundles will give you a wired one]
New, a ps3 and xbox elite are almost running neck and neck
So it really boils down to
Are you frugal when it comes to monthly payments?
Yes: Playstation3
No: Xbox360
Do you HAVE to be able to listen to your own music while playing a game
Yes: Xbox360
No: Playstation3
Are you prepared to learn to use the Ps3 XMB, obviously built from the japanese mindset, or do you want a 'merican display?
XMB: Playstation3
'Merica!: Xbox360
But really, in truth:
Do you prefer your console be built by a software company or a hardware company?
Software: Xbox360
Hardware: Playstation3

That made me think, since xBox has better hardware. And the xBox live gold is worth it. Far better connection then PS3 free stuff. And the RROD is no longer a problem, xbox360s. And my friend said it real well. For the PS3, the name costs. Imo, he said it correctly. If you are comparing used prices, yes

There are so many things wrong with what you just said...
since xBox has better hardware
Not better, depending on how you look at it it's similar, if not inferior in some circumstances
xbox has intel dual core@ 3.2, PS3 has its own Cell MP setup
Xbox has more RAM, but the PS3 more than makes up for that with the CPU Cache from the CMP [and the Cache is much faster]
Xbox uses almost outdaded DVD-ROM tech, while Ps3 has used Bluray from the start, meaning you can put more on a disk, and read from it a little faster
like i said, the big difference is Software V Hardware company, mostly in the mindset going into making them
And the xBox live gold is worth it. Far better connection then PS3 free stuff.
The first one is a matter of opinion, is it worth $15 a month to get what everyone else, PC and Ps3, get for free?
the second one, I have proved to be outright false on numerous occassions
And the RROD is no longer a problem, xbox360s.
Old Xbox revisions still RROD, Xbox elite has similar problems [a friend of mines doesnt do a ring, but a single pulsing light of hatred, as we've called it]
While I have personally seen a Playstation kneed across a room [by accident mind you] with no damage to the disk or console
For the PS3, the name costs
For the Ps3, the bluray drive, onboard wireless network card, Cell microprocessor, and Bluetooth headsets/controllers costs you
Your friend is full of crap, IMO
