So, one of the irc channels that I frequent (#Reddit-Cyberpunk on freenode) might be having a cyberpunk 2020 session at some point.

I've always admired role players from afar, but I've never had anyone to play with. I sincerely wan't to take part, but really have no idea how to go about it. 

I have a few questions: 

1) Is cyberpunk 2020 a good game for newbs at all? I am generally mathematically inclined, and am a seasoned veteran when it comes to crpgs.

2) How does one go about learning this stuff? Do I just get the book? Are there any conventions that I need to know beforehand?

The number one rule of RPing is: Be Polite. Civility is your pass into any circle.
Rule two is: Respect the DM. They are in charge, and if you don't like it, leave.

Following those two rules is all you really need to know. Do some research on whatever game you're looking to join a group on (get your bearings--people help noobs who help themselves), and be brave! I'm certain people will be overjoyed to have a new member who follows the Rules ^ and brings enthusiasm and creativity.

I used to do a lot of text freestyle roleplay, which is bound less by numbers than the integrity and fairness of the other role players. You had to trust that they would be fair in combat situations, which many were. Unfortunately it doesn't really help much with structured roleplaying other than the story part of character creation.

I only just started playing d&d this fall with some friends and I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I think the hardest part for me was getting into the flow of it with my friends. I was so used to carefully planning out what my character should do and you don't have the time to do that when it's in real time.

It is definitely fun, though. I totally recommend it.

I consider myself a decent rplayer i do d&d every saturday and i make up my own custome rps plus i have gmed (same thing as a dm) for at least 3 years now.

The number one thing i would sugest to anyone getting into a rp is dont start one with the huge text books go find a free txt based one online or get some friends togther and just mess around with a few rules. And yes be polite and always respect gm/dm other wise they can make you a bunny in the middle of a sea full of bunny eating dolphins. If you want to try the big text books try pathfinders, D&D 3.5 not 4, or Warhammer 40k Deathwatch.  As for programs online i uselly use roll 20 its a pretty good tt sim.   Hope i helped

If you're getting into Pathfinder the rulebook apps are pretty good and super easy to reference in the middle of a game. 

I started playing DnD for the first time by walking into a local gamestore while they were about to start a weekly and asking to join. We've been playing together for 3 years now. I'm pretty sure I just got lucky though.  ^^ ;
