Why are breakthroughs like this not in the news but celeb gossip always rears its ugly head?

BREAKING NEWS!:
Kim Kardashian goes bowling!
Also, energy production is revolutionised, we guess.
Hey look, someone without makeup on!
It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

Hey look, someone without makeup on!
This is something I look up at least once a month. It pleasures me.

Now what we need is a few enthusiastic billionaires to throw their money at the process of shifting our entire existence from a petrol based transport system to hydrogen fueled engines. If we can now cheaply and easily attain clean hydrogen, it would be the next obvious step. We are going to run out of petrol sooner or later, and hydrogen is supposed to be the most abundant element ion the universe. The solar panel upgrade is a good idea, but imagine a world where hydrogen powered cars are the norm.
We would be one step closer to science fiction.

Hydrogen is a fair bit more volatile than gasoline though. No longer will you hear the squeal of tires followed by a smash, henceforth you shall hear the squeal of tires followed by a large boom and everyone in earshot ducks for cover from the flying car parts
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak for me.

We will just have to put more protection around the fuel tank.
Dangerous as it may be, such is the cost of progress.
Remember, we are a species that loads men in to rockets and sends them in to space, builds trains that can move almost as fast as sound, and smashed microscopic things together at amazing speeds just to see what happens.

Your equation is imbalanced.
H2O -> 2H2 + O2 you've got too much hydrogen and oxygen on one side.
2H2O + O2 -> 2H2 +2O2
That looks better

When it comes to using hydrogen fuel in consumer products, we learned our lesson from the Hindenburg long ago.
The more modern idea I learned in school, was that you would have a non-volatile catalyst and solution of elements which is triggered to produce just enough hydrogen for the 'engine' on demand. Resulting in a method to produce the hydrogen on the fly.
This way if the 'tank' was damaged or something, it would simply leak the non-volatile components independently, without concern for a large volume of hydrogen exploding.
Not sure if i'm making sense here... but i tried.
Of course, for something like a rocket, you might need a larger volume of fuel and this concept may not support that demand... i dont know.

Yea yea yea... we can get real sciency here if you want.
My topic wasn't an attempt at describing the combustion of water, which i think is what you have by adding O2...
It was a meek attempt at describing the splitting of liquid water into the gaseous forms of hydrogen and oxygen through the application of voltage through a silicon and nickel electrode... So really it should be more like:
2 H2O(l) + Magic Electrodes and Light -> H2(g) + O2(g)
