Are you saying that we should try harder than we already are to keep the probes clean?  

 

Or, that we should not being looking into life on other planets with our "primitive" technology?

 

Or something else entirely?

 

Of course I say primitive because we always define earthly technology as primitive compared to the superior technology belonging to all of the aliens we know exist.

I am suggesting that there is a very good chance that life on our planet came from somewhere out there in space.

Most likely via asteroid or other such space rock.

So, maybe other planets just need the same jump start that we may have gotten.

What if in a billion years there is established life on Mars because we trapsed some bacteria around there and got the ball rolling.

If we were in fact a random occurance thanks to space life, why should we sweat the potential for spreading our own life to another planet?

I understand the hesitance to "contaminate" other planets.

But realistically, contaminants are how so many things change in this world that it is bound to happen whether we like it or not.

BTW, I think that's a good idea for a book. A billion years in the future, after mankind has moved on from the bleeding beast that was known as Earth, long after gaia has given up the ghost, and the increasing temperature from the sun has sent Mars into the Goldilocks’s zone. The meddling of homosapian left a mark on the planet, all of the information needed from leftover dna from when they walked upon its useless surface. The air swelled and a useable atmosphere formed. And that's when it happened:

 

Sexy catgirls from mars! The amalgam of human and feline dna mixed in psudoprimordial pools. And, over time, the catgirls claimed the planet for their own.

 

Okay, so the last part was pretty subjective. But there's potential.

The Curiosity is being directed waaaaay away from any possible places life might exist because despite the restrictions, before the probe was about to be shipped off, one of the technicians (I believe) added another part onto the robot that hadn't been decontaminated. It's just one small human error but it means the rover cannot go near any potential green zones in case human bacteria gets a foot hold. That's to just clarify my last point a bit.

It'd be a terrible shame to wipe out any potential Martian life forms with our own bacteria though.
