An eight-year-old boy intentionally gunned down his grandmother minutes after playing the violent video game Grand Theft Auto IV, US authorities said.

The town of Slaughter, Louisiana, is in shock after the child was able to access the family's gun and shoot the 90-year-old in the head while she was watching television.

The woman, who was helping to look after the boy, was pronounced dead at the scene at the Country Breeze Mobile Home Park.

Sheriff's deputies have not revealed a motive but they pointed out the child was playing the video game before the fatal shooting.

The game, which is rated "M" for mature audiences and is recommended for ages 17 and older, has been associated with encouraging violence and awards points to players for killing people.

The child told investigators that he accidentally shot the woman while playing with a firearm, WAFB-TV reported.

But evidence has led investigators to believe the child intentionally shot her in the back of the head as she watched TV, it added.

Neighbour Johnnie Scott told Fox8live.com: "Where did she have the gun?

"Where did he see the gun, was it in his eyesight? That's the thought that goes through my head."

Child psychologist Kristopher Kaliebe said access to a violent video game such as Grand Theft Auto IV may encourage aggressive behaviour.

He said: "From a behaviour therapy perspective, I would say that's practicing.

"So if you have a video game where someone shoots at a target, that's sort of practicing shooting at a target.

"When you have a video game that is shooting at a human being, that is practicing shooting at a human being."

The child is being looked after by his parents. The authorities are treating the shooting as a "homicide".

The boy cannot be charged with a crime because of his age, the sheriff's office said.

Louisiana law states: "Those who have not reached the age of 10 years are exempt from criminal responsibility."

"The town of Slaughter, Louisiana, is in shock"

With a name like "slaughter" I find it hard to believe anyone in the town is shocked.

As for the debate of violence in videogames, it's a pointless fight.

bored suburban mothers see a game with shooting and go "OHMIGAWD SO IMPRESHINIBAL!" But when something like a violent movie or music video/song plays, they go "oh, it's not real it's just entertainment."

God damn.

Several things here....

First off, WHY THE FUCK IS AN EIGHT YEAR OLD PLAYING GRAND THEFT AUTO?!

Seriously?!

What the fuck?!

Anyway.

A 90 year old caring for an 8 year old alone?  I'm sorry, maybe she was incredibly spry for a 90 year old, but that ALSO sounds like a pretty shitty decision.

A gun in a place where a child can easily access it, load, and use it?

Also shitty.

Without knowing more to the story, I have to say the big issue here isn't the game, it's shitty childcare.

There's a whole host of things in this scenario that led to this. First off, don't be stupid enough to put a gun in a kids reach. Secondly, he's eight, not eight months. He should know that pulling a trigger on someone is gonna end badly. Unless he was playing/ didn't know it was real, reh teh teh. Thirdly, yes, GTA is not a good game for an eight year old to play and probably could have factored into this murder. Thirdly, yeah, a 90 year old looking after an 8 year old. Clever.

Overall, I'd say everyone involved is a little dumb. Not that I don't sympathise.

I dunno, I got pretty into 4H after my Harvest Moon kick back when I was a kid. Always plantin' turnips and giving wine to bartenders. Video games tell me to do things. I blame Natsume.

I can't wait for all the backlash about this.

People will flip out and try to boycott the release of the new GTA game and jump on the blame video games for gun violence thing.

All the while they will be ignoring the other stuff, like why an eight year old was handed a violent video game, being watched by a 90 year old, apparently with a loaded firearm sitting around somewhere easily accessible. All signs point to this kid not being taught common sense because everyone around him lacks it as well.

But crotchety people with crotchety complaints will always immediately slap their brains on to one channel and yell until people stop listening.

It is an unfortunate way for things to go, but at the end of the day what will happen?

There will be a lot of noise and bitching and then nothing will change.

Adult games are restricted so that only adults can get them.

What else can be done on top of regimenting and restricting access to adult content other than removing said content.

That isn't going to happen, so maybe the people who become responsible when they purchase these games should step up their game and act like the adults they are required to be in order to obtain them in the first place.

To be fair, violent video games probably do have some impact on violent behaviour, or at least, if someone had a disposition towards it, violent video games might encourage an already latent disposition for it. Many different types of external stimulus could do this. I used to be a gamer, not so much now but I still love video games. That doesn't mean every time something like this happens I pick up the flag and scream that games don't ever cause anyone to do anything bad ever', because they most likely do. The thing is, so does music, literature and other forms of art. They exist to inspire emotion, after all.

I agree with everyone in this thread. An 8 year old being raised by a 90 year old woman (who, honestly, probably had trouble taking care of herself let along a growing child), in a house where he could access a loaded gun is not a good scenario.

There are always going to be those people that only need an excuse to commit some act of violence.

However, an eight year old boy is a different story.

He is a small child, still in the process of his brain wiring itself properly.

In that stage of his life if he is left alone a lot and exposed to violent material, it only makes sense that he would not have the awareness to understand that shooting someone would actually hurt them.

It is no different than if the kid got his hands on some weird fetish porn and watched it all the time.

Odds are that kid is going to adopt those tendencies himself.

the town is actually named after a novel about a jazz musician, if you can believe it.

Huh, and here I figured they where named that because people kept getting killed and the only way to stop it was to convince people to move by calling the town what was happening to it.

Said it before, I'll say it again.  Stupid people make stupid choices and ultimately pass that genetic makeup along to their children.

Imagine for one second that this never happened.

Now, ask yourself what sort of choices would that child have made later in life with such an excellent and responsible upbringing?

I like the idea of stepping up ones game in the context of purchasing a game.  Was the pun intended?

This whole thing screams stupid all the way around.
And the number one tards are the child's parents.
And to think I had a Mississippi state trooper tell me that people there were stupid?
I'm thinking its a little bit bigger of a problem than he thought.
