Earth, Water, Fire, Air.
Each embodies a fighting style, an elemental affinity, and an attitude.

Pick one, remember the super-apex abilities each gets, such as blood-bending.

If you think your personality is different from your preference, then pick two. If you think one is cool, one is practical, pick two then.

Most importantly, SPLAIN YOOSELF.

Fire.  Energetic, adapting, consuming, burning, illuminating, fueling, spreading, destroying, and creating.  Zuko and Iroh were always my favorite characters, haha.

Iroh was my bar none favorite, second is a split between Bumi, Sokka and Roku.

I like Fire best fictionally but if I were a bender I'd surely be earth. Cool fighting style, practical skills outside of a fight. I'm diligent, forceful, strong and steady. Earth has only one slight weakness and its a bitch to make happen.

I'de have to go with water.

Ever-changing, powerful, adapting, ruthless but kind, and necessary to all life.

Blood-bending is just the icing on the cake.

Water bending is sort of a trump card when you think about it.

Everything has water in it for the most part, so you would have at least minor control over all things moist.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

And with most of the planet being covered in the stuff, there's no shortage unless you're landlocked.

Then there's always moisture in the air...

I figured the air thing too.

Same goes for most pieces of Earth, like rocks and such.

Which leaves fire as the only controllable force that water can't affect directly.

 We're thinking too into things. At this rate we'll end up rewriting the premise of the show.

"It all changed when the Water nation attacked..."

While that's true, air is near omni-present, at the very least anywhere that people are. As for earth, I always had quibble with the lack of lava and steel bending(admittedly I didn't see the last 1/4 of the first show).
What exactly is the criteria for earth? I can imagine a guy doing the magneto "Iron in your blood" thing.

Fire not needing to be created, it seems to me is strange. It makes no sense that they can generate theirs when anyone else must create it.

As it stands earth benders are the only ones conceivably separated from their element.

I always wondered how things like mist work, does air or water win for control?

Fire.

I'm sure I can heed the power of the sun to my own evil deeds.

But it doesn't matter, I was born after Korra died, and I'm THE NEW AVATAR!!!!!

Knew it was coming....

Yet you did nothing to stop it.

Almost like you, wanted it to happen?

 Perhaps....

It does set the stage for me to make a Metal Bender pun.
