Sickening, I had to skip half of the feeding bit because I just couldn't watch it. Whole lot of respect for Mos Def for doing this.
For a country that prides itself as the bastion of democracy and the leader of the free world, the government sure has some underhand methods of getting people to do what they want.

I suppose what makes it even harder to stomach is this is a pretty tough guy by most standards, to see him reduced to a crying, begging wreck is really distressing.

Jesus Christ! I don't get it though. Do they do that to inmates that don't want to eat because they are striking or whatever or just do it to everyone?

They do it to the inmates that are on hunger strike and thus, refuse to eat or drink.

This was also the norm years ago (& prolly still is) in mental institutions.
You also gotta remember, people that are on hunger strikes are pretty weak and worn down, not at full strength physically or mentally, and don't have that much fight in them.

Oh, then I don't care. It's their fault for torturing themselves. It's not like their going to get out of there ever.
And actually I find this fascinating. I already watched it like 3 times and might watch it again. It's just hard to think people would go through this 4 hours a day because they are stubborn.

It's not because they're stubborn, it's because they are fucking miserable and being tortured, and death by starvation seems like a better answer than the treatment they're getting.

But it seems like they won't get anywhere if they are force feeding them.

That wasn't so bad to watch.
Uncomfortable once he starts freaking out and crying maybe, but watchable.
Perhaps I have just seen a few too many horrible things to be bothered by that.
In any case, I can't help but feel that that procedure could be performed without so much trauma to the inmate.
He said the tube part wasn't so bad, it was the burning in his nose and brain that made it horrible.
That is almost definitely from when they remove the tube and the "food" gets pumped out into his nasal cavity.
There must be a way to use one tube to administer all nutrition and not have to remove and replace several, for a two hour long procedure as the video said.
Unless pain and discomfort are their goals with the whole thing.
In which case, they seem to be doing it right.
It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

I would say it's because he's 15 and perhaps a little naive but my brother is the same age, he watched, found it abhorrent and then had a discussion with me about it at a philosophical level...so, there's no real excuse.

They do this procedure in hospitals
It's called naso-gastric tubing
And while it's incredibly uncomfortable, it's necessary.
Because I can...

Actually, while I do normally prefer that people have a sense of empathy at that age,
I am pretty willing to forgive teenagers for apathy.
So I retract my previous shock and disgust.

Some people are smart, and some people aren't. That could be a valid excuse.

They are there for their suspected involvement with 9/11.
This makes me say fuck-em.
On the other hand, if they haven't been charged, or found guilty, or been convicted, or whatever, why are they still there....?
I just don't get our government sometimes; all the manipulating and games.
It's no wonder nobody trusts em.

The key word there is suspected. I believe here in the UK you can only be held for a maximum of 72 hours without charge. If they don't charge you after that time's up, they can't legally hold you.
Though the EU is flipping their shit now about prisoner rights in general; apparently life sentences without parole are a breach of the human rights act... lol
