I'm thinking of purchasing Shin Megami Tensei - Digital Devil Saga 1 because I'm sick of the usual RPG's like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect crap that dominates todays market.

I'm looking for a good JRPG, preferably on PS1 or PS2. Many people have suggested the Persona series (Hence the SMT interest) but I haven't really played any of them.

Suggest a good JRPG to The Rob$tar and tell me your experiences with the game.... GO!!!!!

Final Fantasy crap? Dragon Quest crap?

Two series' that pioneered JRPGs as a genre are crap?

Dragon Quest dominates today's market? Err. The last home console DQ was Dragon Quest 8, on the PS2. It came out in 2006. Dragon Quest 9 released on the DS in 2010. I wouldn't call that dominating the market.

Additionally, Final Fantasy hasn't really been a big name since the tenth installment. All the games that came after it were met with widespread dislike.

Yeah, well I'm bored of the usual RPG's that are available today. I care not if they are the pioneers of the genre.... Been there, played that....

I just wana know if there are any decent JRPG's out there. Suggestions?

Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Shin Megumi are the big three. If you haven't played Persona, (A spinoff of Shin Megumi) do it. The old ones on the snes were great, but Persona is on the PlayStation, and that's what you're looking for.

I get what you're saying about Final Fantasy, they haven't been good in a long time. And while I'll always love Dragon Warrior 3 (First rpg I ever beat) the series is kind of stagnate.

Try the Tales series, there's old ones for emulators and new ones on current gen consoles. And if you're going jrpg on PSX, I highly suggest Star Ocean Second Story. Great skill system for crafting items and improving combat stats. Fun dating sim type interactions with your crew.  Persona 3 has a dating system too, it's a very Japanese game. Azure Dreams on PSX is great, if not a bit intimidating. Parasite Eve was one of the games that got me into science back in middle school. Grandia, Crono Cross,  Brave Fencer Musashi (PSX version, not PS) I'm just gonna start listing files in my epsx folder.

I was also eying up Persona 3 but didn't know whether to buy Persona 4 instead. IYO which one did you enjoy?

Holy shit, no outrageous caps?

There's a new JRPG called Ni No Kuni, which I enjoy, but I suck at general RPGs so I wouldn't really know how to recommend it.

NO. BECAUSE I STARTED THIS THREAD ON MY PHONE!!!!!! DAMN AUTO-CORRECT!!!!!!

Yeah I've seen a few videos for Ni No Kuni, absolutely stunning visuals. Aesthetically spectacular in every aspect. Rich textures and colors.... But damn, my PS3 fucked out last month :(

This is one of my Christmas wish list games.

Lol at your topic tags.

I suggest Terranigma, its old and on the SNES but one of the greatest stories in any game. It came from a series which include Soul Blazer and another which I have forgotten but you don't need to play those to enjoy Terranigma.

I also suggest Secret of Evermore which is also an old school SNES game which I couldn't put down when I was a kid. Both of these unlike FF are real time RPGs so none of the turn based stuff.

It's already been said, but I recommend SMT:Persona 3 and 4, and the Tales series are nice changes of pace from the usualy JRPG

Also the Paper Mario series, while not very J RPG, is a pretty fun RPG series

Hahaha. I never noticed them until recently lol.

Hardout oi, I downloaded a SNES emulator a few weeks ago so I could play Chrono Trigger again. I also found an app that allows me to play SNES games on my Ipad. I've never heard of Terranigma, so that's definitely a game of interest.

Latest rom I downloaded was "The Secret of Mana" I played this in the past but now I'm old enough to appreciate it for what it is. *sigh* I wish they would remake a lot of these games.

Persona 3 is $20, but Persona 4 is like $80. FML!!!!!

I so wana play these two, but they had a limited release here in NZ. Kind of rare.

I'm going to start with the SMT Digital Devil Saga's first.... are they very similar???

Star Ocean for the PSX was my favorite, I absolutely love the game. Is long as shit the first time you play, and the game has great replay value. The snes version is good too, you have to patch a rom, though. Unless you're up for thirty hours of complicated kanji.

Terranigma had a super awesome magic system, and the game's sountrack was beautiful. It really showed what the snes could do.

Shim Megumi is more of a snes-era rpg, your character wanders around a map until you bump into an invisible monster. You have a main character to level up, but you can also convince new monsters to join your group. Persona is more 'modern' and your alternate demon form of you and your friends are what you use in battle. I never played 4, but 3 was great. Very Japanese game.

Look up Seiken Densetsu 3. It's a sequel to Secret of Mana that was never released outside of Japan, but there's a patch. And Chrono Cross is a sequel to Chrono Trigger.

P4 is /like/ P3, but they add in some social simulation stuff. You can only go do the heroic adventuring stuff after school, and you have keep a mind on the weather because it affects what you fight. It, too, is a very japanese game. Beautiful soundtrack, likable characters, and all that fun stuff.

As far as the price for both of them, if possible just play on emulator. The games sell for ridiculous prices because of the game's limited release, so unless you /have/ to have a physical copy, you're much better off playing on emulator.

and it's weird you mention SD3, I downloaded it yesterday after hearing about it for the first time [I loved secret of mana] and aside from the "obvious fanslation" feeling, it's a pretty awesome game, especially for SNES era.

Well, not on psx, but xenoblade is epic, if you can get your hands on a copy (or emulate it). Earthbound is great, and one of the most original jrpgs ever. emulate it too.

Yeah I was trying to look for Star Ocean 2 on PSX, I saw the reviews for it and tey we're pretty good. But PSX are hard to come by nowadays.

Yeah I've played Chrono Cross, pretty epic game, but I lost it a few years back :S I like the art style in that one.

Sweet my computer can handle anything up to PS2. Might just emulate a few games instead.

As for P3, I think I'm going to start with that one aye. I was watching a vid that shows that the game changes every night. During the day you're confined to school, then after hours is when the magic begins ;)

Is that Xenoblade on the Wii? I remember watching a review a few years back, someone compared it to FF12 which I enjoyed. Large environments is algoods with me ;)

Yeah, its the very best third party wii title imo. If you can emulate ps2 games, you might as well give wii a shot. Shouldn't take too much oomph.

If you are going for Secret of Mana then go Secret of Evermore, the combat system is exactly the same, the story is quite simple although contains a nice metaphor. The art style is less... Kawaii... or "Obviously JRPG" then secret of mana but still fantastic. Terranigma on the other hand is obviously old school JRPG but with very dark undertones. It has a very complicated story metaphorically although if that is what you are going for then you need to play all three since although the story is stand alone the themes of all three games touch on different sides of the same basic narrative.

BTW the two others in the series are Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia.

I would recommend Earthbound but to play it properly takes a huge chunk of time of course Mother and Mother 3 are in the same boat.

Lufia I started to play a couple years ago but due to life circumstances I had to put them down, the series started well and might be worth a look.

Can't stress Terranigma enough though, I think it is exactly what you are looking for since what you have mentioned so far is mostly retro-RPG in the SNES era. Since you are into the game music genre Ill post some of the music for it since I think you will appreciate it.

I learnt this on the Guitar because it is one of the most beautiful pieces ever with a hint of sad undertones and that feeling of "things are going to change".

This is fantastic and although I have learnt it on Guitar I think that it would need multiple layering to capture it, I would love to do a rock style cover one day maybe with a hint of Punk. In any case there were times I wouldn't go into a town because I just wanted to hear the entire piece.

Finally this is a fantastic piece for just going on an imagination journey. I would compare it to Nightwish - Imaginarium in how it can just take you so many places in one simple song.

Tales of Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia.

There's a whole series, but those two games are just the best. I like them better than most of the classics, even. WAY better than any Final Fantasy that I've played (although the appeal is decidedly different).

I don't think he needs to be immortal. I think all he needs to do is to write the right story. Because some stories do live forever.

Wow, that first song from Terranigma was absolutely beautiful. You are right, the music of the game really has a profound impact on my gaming experience and that's normally how I get my inspiration for MY music.

I don't mind the complexities of a game, I mean JRPG's tend to be really sophisticated and complicated. hahaha

You have sold this game to me now, I'm really curious to hear what other songs this game has to offer.

Downloaded, locked, now loaded.

Cheers ;)
