I have always owned every console available since the days of Nintendo 64 and Sony Playstation. I currently own a Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 and a gaming PC. I have enjoyed them all in very different ways. Lately there are a lot of rumors floating around about next gen consoles. Word is the next Xbox and possibly the PS4 will require an always online connection even for single player games. This does not appeal to me for several reasons. First off, you will no longer be able to buy used games. I remember when Mass Effect 3 came out I needed to play the second one first. So I went to Gamestop and picked it up for $20. This is a convenience I enjoy as a gamer. Second is that When you look at recent single player games that require an online connection to play such as Sim City or Diablo 3, often times you will have issues with the servers. This can lead to many gamers being unable to play the new game they just purchased until many days after they purchased the game. The next issue I have is backwards compatibility. It seems consoles these days would rather leave out backwards compatibility in favor of lowering the price of the console and making it more accessible to people. While this can be a good thing I can not help but feel I am being ripped off. If you have a PC and a Steam account, you can have access to your entire game library across multiple generations. Even if you buy a new PC you can still transfer your account and all of your games to your new PC. Another irritating fact about the next gen consoles is that the graphics cards being used in them are actually less powerful than many of the cards that came out a year ago. When I put all of these things together I am tempted to use the $600+ I would spend on a console an extra controller and a game and just buy a new processor and a super high end graphics card such as a GTX 680 with an HDMI output so I can play on my T.V. With that alone my PC would be more capable than a new console with an 8 year lifespan. And with Steam's big picture mode I would rarely have to sacrifice the game controllers I have grown so used to in place of a mouse and keyboard. Really, the only thing keeping me from doing this would be the exclusive games that come to consoles, but at this point is that really even worth it? I do understand that you can not buy or resell used PC games, but games are often cheaper on PC to begin with, not to mention Steam often has crazy sales where you can get 50% to 75% off tons of games. Also I have noticed a trend with developers charging people for DLC. I can justify characters and map packs, but things like weapons, armor and abilities can easily be modded into a PC game for free! I want to hear your opinions. Why should I avoid upgrading my PC and opt for a next gen console instead?

Never.

I keep my porn and my video games separate.

But I don't think the next gen consoles will be exclusive to the internet. That's an idea maybe for the future, but I don't think that's a good idea in this day and age. Maybe if they allow free public wifi to everyone then it's a possibility. But not everyone can afford the net atm. It would kill off a large portion of potential consumers.

Plus someone was telling me that XBOX wanted to disallow the playing of second hand games. lol I know that won't work.

I dunno, my PS3 hard drive is filled with the stuff...

Anyway, look at this: http://www.vg247.com...-source-claims/

Quote from link: "Starting with the thorny always-online issue, the source stated, “You are not required to be connected to the internet in order to play Durango games and MS were NEVER considering doing such a thing. Now please, just read that last sentence over and over again until it sinks in. Done? Good.”"

But dollars to donuts that Microsoft would love to stop the secondhand market, force you to buy 60$ new games from them.

So, pick up a new console if you wanna, or if you have the time and money, pimp out your pc and run awesome mods and say 'Screw you, DLC.' Either option is fine, mostly just a personal preference. The gaming market will always be user friendly to those who play on consoles, they don't wanna lose money.

I just realized that PC has no split screen multiplayer. That is a huge deal breaker for me. If the next xbox does not require an online connection I could get behind that if only to have split screen capabilities.

Btw, I think next gen games will be $70. But that has yet to be confirmed.

Personally, I consider it foolish to buy a new console as soon as it releases. Looking at the previous generation, or rather, current, the first releases have been buggy, prone to breakdowns, and generally far more expensive for far less gain. Both the PS3 and 360 have far more functionality, and are far more reliable now, than they were upon release, as well as being cheaper and carry a much wider range of games.

First buyers are paying to beta-test, basically.

That said, I would never give up my consoles in favour of a high-end PC. While yes, I enjoy PC gaming, I don't enjoy the effort required with some games. Modding games is great, but when it fucks up it's not so fun. Similarly, older games are a bitch at times. I still can't get the original Fallout working correctly, nor can I run Dungeon Keeper. With consoles, I am assured that when I purchase a game, it will work. With consoles, I can purchase games when they are less expensive, and still not be at risk of them not working correctly due to incompatibilities with drivers or hardware. My PC cannot run all that many games from the 90s without a great deal of fiddling. My PS3 can run any PSX game I wish to play.

The upcoming/on-release titles for both the new Xbox and new Playstation are underwhelming. The only ones that are truly interesting are being cross-released with the 360/PS3, which to me cries that the only additions will be slightly upgraded graphics, akin to the Wii-U's games. Controller functionality and a slight visual upgrade is all you get with the Wii-U, and that's on games that have released 2+ years ago.

On the subject of DLC vs modding... it's a stupid argument. DLC is not required. Be it map packs or weapon packs, you do not need them. They are there if you want them. To coin a phrase, "An item is only worth what the buyer is prepared to pay for it." I don't mind buying small DLCs, especially if I've purchased a game preowned--it's only fair that the developer gets some kind of gain from my enjoyment of their product, after all.

Games will increase in price. Here in the UK most new releases are £45 now, whereas they used to be £40, only going above that for limited editions or extremely rare releases. Welcome to the economy. Everything is going up in price, be it food, gas, or games. I don't see a huge issue with that.

To be fair. I bought my PS3 when it first came out for $600. It is the only current console with backwards compatibility and it still runs like a champ. I am however on my 4th xbox.

A tip for making older games work. Get Oracles Virtual Box and make a WinXP/98/95 segment to run them. I have to do it for software sometimes, and it should work for games as well.

On topic.

I personally prefer to play on the computer 9/10. I do however miss the relaxed feel of playing a console sometimes, and depending on how the next gen works out, I may be investing in one.

As a general rule I wait about a year to buy any new console. They usual come out with a newer version of both hardware and software (and sometimes they actually function) and it's cheaper. Plus, they have a good library of new and used games out by then.

But I'm actually the opposite on DLC, I only buy bigger ones. New lands in Skyrim and all that.

And I read somwhere just a day or two ago that Sony thinks their games should come in anywhere from 1-60 USD. Supposedly they'll be offering more options to indi developers, hoping to mimic apps and such.

Has anyone head of the Ouya? Wiki. A little box that runs Android and can be modded easily. It sounds like it might be a big indi-based system.

There are PS4 games listed on Amazon for $100. I really hope that will not be standard pricing.

not many people are going to want to play it.

it's basically a stationary phone, without the phone/texting side.
