So far, just a simple 8'x2'  planter bed made from 2x8's. Tis the season for gardening though, and I think I need to nerd things up a bit.

Lets have some suggestions.

So, I hooked up my irrigation source.

I've got a 55 gallon drum going to a battery operated irrigation timer, set to turn on for 35 minutes at 7:30 am. It feeds 8 drip spigots along the bed to keep the plants watered. Whole system should use less than two gallons a day, which means that I won't have to fill up the barrel often. I'll be adding a screen to it soon so that I can use it as a rain barrel, further increasing the time between filling. I plan on adding at least one more 8' bed soon, and then starting to experiment with vertical gardening.

Over the course of the year, I'm going to try and figure out just how much food product I can squeeze out per square foot of land. If I get positive results, I'll do a big write up on it.

Hilarious.

I pictured him with big sunglasses on (because that sun is waaay to bright man) and pulling them off like a confused David Caruso and dropping that line.

If you are growing any sprawling vegetables like cucumbers and such, what you can do is set up some high angle ramps for them to grow up.

If you base the ramp along a row of cucumbers (or similarly growing vegetables) you can force them to grow up it and once they produce the cucumbers will hand over the top edge of the ramp. This makes it so that the never have that yellow side from sitting on the ground, and they are effectively growing up, leaving more ground space for other things to be planted. Sprawling vegetables take up a huge amount of space and from my experience if you can trick them in to growing up something instead of laying flat and taking up half of the garden you can plant a large amount of other produce.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

Just remember the FBI monitors power usage so make sure you are using the bare minimum amount of UV lamps. It also doesn't hurt to become a horticulturist which means it won't look strange when you are walking through town with a wheelbarrow of compost and Doritos... ok that would still look strange I guess.

Nothing fun, tomatoes and peppers and such.

No sprawling vegetables yet, but I've done some research on them, and how to grow them on tressels and such like tomatoes.

No grid power needed, just two AA batteries.

Shit no, genetically modified all the way. Science ftw.

I didn't really keep up with the garden like I should have, but I should note that there are still currently plants alive and well in it.

I wish I could have a garden but I live in an apartment.  Maybe now that I'm moving into a house I can plant something..... though I do tend to kill everything I've tried in the past.. maybe start small? lol
