For source games probably just reserve slots for members above a certain rank (ie a trusted level of x many posts) and for minecraft we can automate a whitelist system (you'd have to provide your minecraft name on your profile) - adds that username to the whitelist and creates a nick off of your display name.

Pretty much this. Though I was going to do it manually.

Pft, doing things manually is for chumps. I've never run a source server but I presume the slots are easy to add/remove from an external source.

Minecraft would be ezpz, it just uses flat files.

Before you set up the VM environments let's have a chat (assuming you want the process automated) - it'll take a little bit of configuring.

If only I could automate more things...

This reminds me of having to look into Java so I can write a little app for my phone to automatically log-in on the school network >_>

Ah. Basically, I put together a server, and with my boss' permission I have it running here at work, and will give it a static IP. I'll be able to host all sorts of games and such on it for forum goers to play.

Ooh that's awesome! Nice one, mate. =D

I heer dat.

If I hadn't 'needed' them, I would never have learned bash, C#, css, or python - And they have all come in handy at one time or another.

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Maybe Tuesdayish if everything goes right? The servers were finalized sometime last week so I just need to make an automatic whitelist pulled from our users.

We still need to decide on mods, pvp enabled/disabled etc.

It's together and running. Emo is working on getting minecraft running, and I suppose I need to get the other things going as well.

Wouldn't expect minecraft to take that long once you start, I took 2 evenings to install ubuntu server and get the tekkit mod installed, debugged and remotely accessible.

It's more than that. We want a whitelist system so we don't get griefers but we also don't want to have to manually enter them all. My approach is to expose a web service on the minecraft box that the NF server will communicate with to generate the whitelist from authenticated, opted in users. It's nothing that complex or hard but it's challenging finding the time when you're doing overtime. :P

Indeed, I forgot we had discussed the whitelist, and I didn't know you were optimizing it so well.
