With the announcement of the PS4 being released soon I couldn't help but to think that the PS3 hasn't really had a good long life....

I remember the PS1 and PS2 were out like FOREVER!!!! And the PS2 continues to sell well here in NZ.... I first bought my PS3 back in 2007-8, and it doesn't seem like I've had it very long....

Truth be told i only bought my console so I could play METAL GEAR SOLID 4..... aside from the odd Uncharted game I haven't really made the most of my PS3.... heck I don't even watch Blu-Rays....

Another problem is that the PS3 has been cursed with bugs, like my PS3 suffered from the YLOD a few years ago, my brothers now freezes at the Reboot screen..... This shit has had more problems then the first generation XBOX 360...

This is the end of an era for the PS3..... I must say that the 360 has been the dominant console this decade despite the fact that I am a SONY fanboy.... Kinda sad that they are fazing out the playstation to pave the way for another hunk of junk....

RIP

Here Lies the clunky black power machine who died before their time... They MIGHT be heavily missed.... but I doubt it.... Killed in action to pave the way for a supposed better console....

6 years isn't bad. Besides, they only stopped producing new PS2s last year, I believe. As in, 6 years after the announcement of the PS3.

I doubt it's anywhere near dead yet.

It's really weird tho. 6 years isn't really that long, and I think the PS3 is still up to date in terms of technology.

I think it's just a ploy to make more money out of us.

Once the PS4 launches it is inevitable that they will phase out the PS3 as soon as possible. They haven't really had that much faith in it :(

Lol, this is me 100%. Aside from the odd jrpgs and ps classics I don't use the machine for gaming. I watch anime and porn, but no blu-ray.

And if the PS4 pulls that DRM bull, I won't be buying. Ditto for new xbox.

Indeed. I normally just use it to watch my pirated AVI movies and series. In reality there isn't a hell whole lot of good (exclusive) PS3 games.... The only game I would consider buying off PSN that I don't own is Final Fantasy 9....

I've never had any problems whatsoever with my PS3, is was always fast efficient, and played well. But it was only last year, after 5 years, it got YLOD. Which isn't bad really, considering it got heavy usage.

absolutely love my ps3, been perfect to me. I agree the ps4 seems to be coming too soon, but I have a crap ton o games for it so it got tons of play, where as my 360 fizzled and died, and I was told there was nothing they could do. Though ps4 is backwards compatible, so thats good to hear.

I heard most of the games are going to be $100. I'm not buying it because of that and because I don't really like console games that much.

100$ for games is just retarded. Pile that on top of the other crap that's been rumored/confirmed and I might just pass as well.

"No backward capability…yet: The PS4 won’t be able to play PS2 or PS3 games, it’s true. But Sony’s stated hope is that eventually, by utilizing the cloud and the PS4′s existing streaming abilities, that emulation of the entire PlayStation line’s library of games will be possible at some point."

It is sort of the nature of technology to speed up as it gets more and more effective.
A machine that is good will produce a machine that is better, and so on and so on until the time that a previous device becomes obsolete sooner and sooner before the next edition comes out.

Exponential growth is a staple of our species.

The PS3 is horribly out of date in tech.

Compared to most Desktops, yes. But it's still a powerful machine!!!! I think it's still capable of producing some good games. Besides, I'm not too big on graphics, I think Metal Gear Solid with the pixel block faces is far more enjoyable then MGS4 LOL

So since sony wants to keep up to date they'll let us upgrade the hardware in our consoles right?....right?

One thing I'll concede to microsoft, adding a hard drive to the 360 is incredibly easy and doesn't seem to be to risky, where as it would seem sony wants to keep their system locked up tight

I'd like to see a console that can do at least 1080p60.

But the PS3 can be upgraded with any compatible hard drive. From what I've heard, a non-Microsoft hard drive will only accept a maximum of 32GB on a hard drive.

I have had a nightmare of a time every time I've tried to use an external hard drive of any kind with my xbox.
Often times the xbox just flat out gives me the finger and tells me there is no such thing as the hard drive I have plugged in to it.
I have also formatted a hard drive for the goddamn thing and it told me I couldn't use it as a storage device.
No reason given.

I'm not sure how it is now, but originally you could get around this by mirroring the mircosoft hard drive image to the larger drive, and it would then recognize the extra space.

Ah I was slightly wrong. You cannot use more than 32GB of storage space on any USB hard drive, flash drive, etc. I'm unsure about replacing the official hard drive with one though. I know replacing the PS3 hard drive voids the warranty though.
