Further study on the data leads them to believe there are five planets within the orbit of this star, one with an orbit of 168 days and mass at least 4 times that of our own earth's. This planet is within the habitable range of Tau Ceti.

Who wants to go?

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

I can't wait until we find a planet like this with life on it.

That really will be the coming of a new age. Though I think we'll detect something like radio signals first.

Oh oh, I'll go! =D
I don't think he needs to be immortal. I think all he needs to do is to write the right story. Because some stories do live forever.

That's assuming they will be advanced enough to use signals as such, and they actually decide to use radio waves. They could go with something completely different depending on the terrain, technological paths, etc.

If we inhabit another planet that is way out there, we can have a more distant outpost to send our own radio signals out.
Thus increasing our chances of finding other signals not of our own design.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

That's why I said something 'like'. :P

In a book series I'm re-reading right now, there's an alien race that seems to communicate through genetics, they create viruses and engineered molecules to convey information,

That's pretty nifty.
I was also thinking, what if they evolved without eyes? They could use the visible light spectrum instead of radio/microwaves.

What if we find a species that ISN'T more advanced than our own? I've had this thought before, like they're just now hitting their version of the middle ages. Is it right of us to just show up or would that be like us contacting one of those few tribes here on earth with no knowledge of anything outside themselves? There is a tribe like this in South America I believe

Mighty horse rocks, he rocks the fat ass.

See, the thing is that even if there is life on the planet (which there is a decent chance of), so many things could be different to them. Forget different customs as with countries, we're talking different brains, different thought patterns, if they even have what we define as a brain. Their patterns of logic could greatly differ from ours. Everything could be the same, everything could be different. There could be a bunch of Bigfoots running all over the place, but that doesn't mean it's likely. The possibilities are virtually limitless, so why worry about what you can't control versus what you can control? (What I'm trying to say is that it'd make more sense to prepare for gravity changes, changes in air pressure, and adapting to the environment versus debating over what life, if any, is possibly there. When you finished that discussion, you would be no closer to finding out than you were when you started.)
Besides that, this is very exciting :D

If we run in to any sort of life out there, my money is on it being a bacteria of some sort.
Not a creature of some sort, just something small and cellular.

I'd love to see some ammonia based life as might exist on Titan. That'd be the shit.

Read this a while back.
The article is from 2010 so its old news, but still awesomely cool and opens our eyes to the potential of finding other life out there that is very different from what we know.

Definitely. You have to love biology, no matter what is thrown in the way, life somehow manages to break the barriers down and acclimatise. That in itself is an inherently beautiful thing.

Not to mention incredibly impressive.
The odds of certain biological units even existing is fantastically small.
Yet there they all are, sticking it to the man.

Kinda puts your problems into perspective, huh?

Hell, it puts ALL problems into perspective.
