HAN SHOT FIRST!
He sure did.
And that is what makes him a hero.

“In old Westerns, when the hero and villain would face off in a duel, the hero would traditionally wait for the villain to draw, then draw awesomely faster and shoot first. Anti Heroes facing a villain, would simply draw first.”
Lucas remixing he original to have him wait to draw was an attempt to make him a hero, but the original is what makes him a badass.
And to be clear, Matty, you're talking about Star Wars ep 1-3, right? I couldn't guess why you'd skip the one where Kirk beats Spock in 3D chess.

Actually, that’s the definition of an anti-hero. From the Tropes page:
“In old Westerns, when the hero and villain would face off in a duel, the hero would traditionally wait for the villain to draw, then draw awesomely faster and shoot first. Anti Heroes facing a villain, would simply draw first.”
Lucas remixing he original to have him wait to draw was an attempt to make him a hero, but the original is what makes him a badass.

Also, when they go to the cloud city and fall into Lando's douchebag trap Han shows his shoot first ask questions later mentality.
When they walk in to that dining room and Darth Vadar is standing there to greet them he immediately whips out his blaster and attempts to shoot holes in Vadar.
What kind of balls does it take to pull a move like that when unexpectedly faced by the reigning Sith Lord in the galaxy?
Huge ones, that what.
It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

Yes I'm talking Star Wars Episodes 1-3 (though if you must watch them, I suppose 3 is the best.) and come on affray, Lando was trying to protect the city. Misguided yes, but doucebag? bit harsh don't you think?

Oh he is a douche.
They draw parallels between him and Han being the same kind of douche, which I assure you, they are.
Though he does turn it around and help out a lot in the coming battles and such, so he is ok then.
But at first, huge douche.
