Do any of you actually make an outline before you start writing? Or do you make things up as you go?

Depends, you won't be able to write a full 50,000 word novel without planning. I wrote my novelette spontaneously but I'm planning my second novelette because I'm finding it harder to pull off.

I outline when I'm writing anything of significant length, but my outlines are super messay and informal.
They're like:
-Characters:
-Charles
-Does he have parents? Who cares.
-Talks funny, tall.
-Potential romantic lead? No.
I don't think he needs to be immortal. I think all he needs to do is to write the right story. Because some stories do live forever.

Veering briefly off topic, I just bought myself my first inkwell for my Waterman. Very excited for it to arrive. Twa and I are looking for another, vintage one as well which I could purchase. I love a good fountain pen after all.

I've never tried such a pen, but it sounds baller as hell. =P

I always resented my outlines when I was forced to do them in school, so I don’t use one just out of principle. It works better anyway.

I’ve never used a old school pen for writing before. Drawing, yes. But I figure I’d ruin any notebook I tried to use it on.

I didn't used to use outlines at all, but I've recently started to really enjoy them as they keep me from writing myself into a corner too badly.
