I was just wondering if anyone has any favourites from the old consoles? I'm thinking that the game should be 10 years old or older to be classed as retro. Also, to save making another thread in the PC games section, PC games count here too! =)

My fav series ever is Oddworld, AO and AE produced in '97 and '99 respectively I think. Those games resonated with me on a level that no interactive media ever has, before or since. I think Fallout 1 and 2 follows closely but they just didn't catch me in the same way that Abe did. Oh, and now that New 'n' Tasty is in the works for a 2013 release, I'm really excited!

Fun fact: Typing in 'new n tasty oddworld' into Google Images will give you a picture of me. Scary!

You were a winner of a speed quiz giveaway eh.
Pretty pas mal.

I remember when Oddworld came out and I wanted it so damn bad, but never got it.
I don't recall why, but it never happened.
I have always felt like a part of my childhood was missing because of it.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

The only retro game that comes to mind for me is centipede, but that was an arcade game.

Remember arcades?

Remember being stoked as hell to go to one with a pocket full of change?

Nah, I didn't win, I put my hand up for the signed limited edition Oddworld hard cover concept art book in a portfolio case that I definitely wouldn't kill to get my hands on. Some little shit who put his hand up after me won it. I'm not bitter though. I don't hate him.

I've never wanted to mug a 10 year old so much in my entire life.

It doesn't even matter than I have a copy already. I want another one.

Oh, also, A Bug's Life, when I got that on the PS1 I was a happy kid.

Wow... 10 years... looking that up that's like every game I liked as a kid...

Thanks for making me feel old T_T

As for favorites, the original NES zelda was always my favorite. Where Mario and Megaman was run to the right, Zelda has always been about exploration and problem solving. I always liked that.

Currently speedrunning "Zelda no Densetsu: Toki no Okarina", or Ocarina of Time, it's funner to say the japanese name

That game was a big part of my childhood, and there's something awesome about being able to speedrun it in 30 minutes [even faster once I get warp buffering down]. Also, I can do some fun party tricks with the game now, like major sequence breaks [I can get the master sword with just the kokori sword and shield] and other fun glitches.

Pretty much any rpg from the SNES era. Back when the story had to carry the game. Graphics weren’t as important. Music was nice, but could be reproduced with enough kazoos and monkeys. The characters! The plot! These were the things that made the games.
Chrono Trigger and Zelda are giveaways. The Lufia series holds a large portion of my heart. (I mean, it’s not like I made a green haired tsundere witch a main character in my first novel or anything) Secret of Mana was refreshingly new, Evermore was good, but far too easy.
Dragon Warrior 3 for the NES was the first game I ever defeated. It took me all winter and most of spring, but a seven year old me conquered it.
It’s sad, some of the best memories from my childhood involve fictional characters with magic.

My first novel, Seeds of Magic- Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, Kobo, Sony Store

Most of my favorite games are retro games. It is sad to think about how old I am and that all the games I grew up with are called retro. Same with my music.. I wanted to listen to some rock I enjoy, and I had to listen to a classic rock station. I was like "Wtf! I was in Highschool when this came out... "

Anyways my favorite older games are mostly RPGs.

Parasite Eve
Resident Evil 2
Final Fantasy 8
Lunar: Silver Star
Donkey Kong Country
Mario Party
Vagrant Story
Romancing Saga
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy Tactics
Legend of Dragoon
Toejam and Earl
Xenogears
Mortal Kombat 3
Street Fighter 2
Breath of Fire 3
Wild Arms

Streets of Rage. For some time after I got a Mega Drive (in 1992 I think, or 1993 all I had for it was a 6-in-1 cartridge with a soccer game, Columns, Sonic The Hedgehog, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and something else too. Spent most of my time on SoR and Shinobi though. Sonic was fun, but it got boring.

Also Blaze Fielding. <3

I think Tower of Doom and Nightstalker for the Intelivision are also up there for me. Some fond memories playing those that are way before my time.

Tower of Druaga! there are many many more, but that is the first to come to mind.

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak for me.

My mom was a loose drunk.

when the bitch would go drinking, she'd pawn us off on relatives. that, however, was in walking distance of where i lived a couple times.

My childhood games didn't go much earlier than NES.. but my favourite games come for the SNES era. Gradius 3 was definitely in my top 5.. addictive. Super Metroid. <3 Resident Evil 2, Parasite Eve. Wow do I ever wish I could play these right now. Earthbound.. Good times.. I should go get a Retroduo next week. Haha.

Super Mario Bros (1, 2, and 3, as well as the lost levels and Super Mario World).
Zelda (original, Link to the Past, Link's awakening, Majora's Mask, and Ocarina of Time, one of the best games ever.)
Space Invaders
Sneakers (A game on the Apple II)
Pac-Man
Yeah, I went all retro :D

Many great games were named here, but there is only one correct answer for the best retro game and that is Mega Man X. Darius Twins was awesome as well.

Mighty horse rocks, he rocks the fat ass.

Both 2 and 3 were awesome games, I suggest 4, 6, and 9 for music. (after 2 and 3 of course.) or as I mntioned, x 1-4

My favorite retro game must be Phantasy Star for the sega master system. Or any of the old zelda games.
I also have i quite a bit strong feelings for Super Metroid.
