One of my best friends does it in texts, but I think it's because texting is still magical space technology for her.

And then I realised I study English and I actually think that it has its place, as all abbreviations do, considering they've been around since the medieval times. In modern text based discourse it is completely out of place however, unless you really do require a modicum of brevity or it's a very brief SMS based discourse I suppose.

People seem to think the dawn of texting brought about these abbreviations. They've merely brought them into public usage. Be'twixt, t'was and isn't are elisions we now see as fundamental and standard to English. Don't all jump on the hate train without doing a wee bit of prior research first.
Don't forget about Double Contractions
Where you're so strapped for time that you have to gut 3 words.

A friend of mine called them Contract'Sean's.

I make my own contractions. <__<

How intrigueing.
While in college my roomates and I would get outselves in to some pretty long debates on various topics of the usual sort.
Religion, politics, zombie survival, etc.
I happen to have a vast, vast bank of various facts and (not so) general knowledge of everything I have ever come into contact with.
So during these debates/comparison of notes with my roomates they always ended up learning at least a few new things about some random topic or subject that they did not previously know. After this became a habit they were impressed enough with these factoids that they were always learning from me they coined the term "Shawnversation".
This of course being a conversation where you come out more knowledgeable in the end whether you like it or not.
So not only do we share a name.
We share a clever name related coinage.
Quite righteous.
It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.
