I am currently taking online college classes and was very impressed with their forum layout.
When you first get to the forums it lists the main topics of discussion in the middle of the page and when you select a topic it brings you to a folder tree like system to view posts

I'll try to type out an example

RE:Main Topic First post

I know this is a poor representation of the system I'm trying to explain.
I'll try to capture a screen image of the forum I am attempting to write and post it here later

Wow! All the spacing I did while trying to write a text version of the forum I was explaining just went kaput. Ignore that example. I will post a pic to better show idea later

This is a screenshot of my schools forum. It makes it easy to navigate and is a great way to have side conversations with out getting off topic for the rest of the readers in the forum

That's one of the old BB systems, there are still a few sites that use them because of simplicity and server load, but they are generally obsolete now because of stylistic preferences.
