First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Workers are now mistreated by union affairs in exactly the same ways that workers were treated by employers way back when.
Pretty damn ironic.
Unions are also filled with an insane amount of petty politics and grudge matches, which does nothing to actually help anyone.
It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

My dad works for Oscar Meyer - becoming a union representative is purely a popularity contest and has no real bearing on whether you'd be good at it or not. Idiots electing idiots to negotiate with intelligent upper crest ftw.And this is why, even though they were once needed, unions suck.

When he started the union there had merit and pulled some weight, but the time he left it was exactly like you describe.
A popularity contest that ended with some boob put in a position to relay information back and forth.

They have it pretty good, what with the reasonable hours and weekends&three months in the summer off.
Yet they always have some issue with some mundane aspect of their job and go on strike to get another layer of comfort in their already squishy professions.
It isn't like the States where teachers are paid shit and no one cares about them.
