As far as parts and lifespan of guns, a well maintained one can easily last generations. The oldest in my collection is a .22 rifle from 1921. All original, and still in working condition. I shoot it regularly. There are many muskets from the 1600's and earlier still in perfect working condition.

As for the import/export and war on drugs, (which spleenbe talkin' bout) I think you could reduce gun crime by reducing the penalty for drug crimes. But the politicians want all the "bible thumpers" to vote for them, so it will be awhile.
I believe we have the largest criminal population in the world?

I think one way to reduce gun crime is to change the way they are portrayed in movies, tv shows, etc. People who do not have real gun experience I would think are inclined to evaluate through TV and video games. That would reduce the domestic gun crimes you hear about on CNN.

The States has the largest prisoner population in the world I believe.
However, that does not mean it has the largest criminal population in the world.
A lot of countries don't crack down on a lot of criminal activity as much as the States does.
I think the place with the highest criminal concentration is fairly obvious.
Gotham city.
It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.
