'ello to all of you!

As you have probably suspected already, I'm new here.
I've had some experience with other forums as well, but I decided to be active here from now on, because it fits my interests :D

My name is Don btw, but you can just call me Dasher or something.

As do I. I'm in the processes of figuring out a Nerd Forum game night, and AoE may be one of the included games.

If it's LAN/Hamachi-style I'm in.

We should play BL2 and Rise of Nations and Warcraft III.

I still play it once in a while. There are still many active players.
And very important: DotA still pwnzorates LoL in all ways.

I know, and I shall take their flame like a man. A true DotA-loving man!

BTW: how do I get rid of the title 'Byte', I find no honour in such a title. Give me something that is able to represent my valour!

DotA Allstars was originally made by Guinsoo

who later went applied all the principles he learned from that to LoL, while IceFrog continued the legacy of DotA, making it the game it is now and being hired by Valve to head Dota2

Look, I know it kills people to admit it

but it's practically the same game

two juxtaposed bases with 11 turrets, with 10 champions duking it out, even made by the same people

If you did it with any other game/mod/genre, people would immediately call it a clone

but there will always be people trying to prove why one is better than the other, when it's inherently a matter of opinion

inb4 people rage trying to prove one better than the other

They are basicly the same, it's just that Riot is too clearly aimed at making profits with their continuous creation of newer more powerful champs.
The balance in DotA is simply better.

This is incredibly true. I don't think the power creep is intentionally aimed at profiteering, but the power creep in league is something that is getting progressively worse and worse.

I'm a fan of league over Dota 2 for two simple reasons (neither of which a flaw of either game, simply a preference)

League has a much higher skill floor, while maintaining a similar skill cap to dota. Much easier for a new player to get used to, but the big plays and differential between good and bad is still there. I can definitely see why some people don't like the easier intro, but I like being able to introduce friends/coworkers to the game.

Abilities in league are much more spammable and, in my eyes, makes the lane phase feel much more fun. I'm sure people prefer much more meaningful abilities in dota (ie, you can't spam and if you execute it right it's much more rewarding) but I prefer the disengage/engage of the league style.

Just my preference, though, and I can see why anyone would prefer DoTA over league.

I don't like how LoL is so easy to get into actually, I actually like feeling somewhat elite.

actually, both are balanced, it's just a different type of balance,

DotA goes for the older rigid balance, which unfortunately causes a rigid imbalance, if not constantly fixed, or made perfectly from to start [the second is almost impossible, btw]. And even if a perfect balance is made, it would be undone by changing almost any factor, including new characters/levels/etc. So the end result is a balance where all the characters do what they were meant to do well and the games boil down to player planning, reaction time, knowing the game well, etc. And it becomes a game much like Chess, you know the pieces, you know how they work, and you win. Nobody is gonna bust down your door with Chess 2.0.

LoL has implemented a cyclical imbalance, not nearly as bad as it sounds [and note, it's something that most MMO-anythings do, intentionally or unintentionally]. It's basically that everyone [in LoL/DotAs case, 1 player per match basically] will play the strongest champion [X] until people come up with a strategy using an existing or new champion [Y] to lessen or defeat Xs imposing unbalance; Then everyone will use Y, and the process will repeat itself. Which obviously influences the game strongly, but creates a powerful changing metagame with the loads champions that do exist, the unique ones they create, and their interplay, and encourages players to always try new champion combos in pursuit of X, or Y.

Also, I want to note that the only thing in LoL that costs money is aesthetic upgrades [champion skins], everything else can be bought with in-game currency

I think Extra Credits did an episode on it...

Both are just icing on the 5v5 cake, really, like we agreed they're basically the same game

EDIT: Managed the Frankenstein monster that is my post

Yeah, like I said it's not a flaw in either game just a preference.

It isn't a flaw, I agree.
Most would probably view it as an advantage even.

@Wolf
I don't consider that 'cyclinical balance' to be true balance. It just doesn't fit with my view of balance, so it might just be me though.
