Okay I'm going to break this down... Humans are not the best race to play, they are the most versatile to start, however strong-heart halflings, drow, duergar, genesai and many other races are strong to play but for different reasons. It depends what you want to do. In my experience the best (but cheapest) build for a character is a svirfneblin monk/druid build. They get a lot of bonus armor for wisdom, wisdom is what druids use to cast. Monks get a lot of unarmed bonuses, druids turn into a variety of things from badgers to dragons, so building up strength and armor (wisdom) and a bit of dex maybe like 12 at least on that character build will be the best. There are also a lot of prestigue classes that allow special abilities that are pretty cool too. Some of my personal favorites are assassin, arcane archer and shadow dancer. Your svirfneblin monk/druid build wouldn't necessarily be a good stealth build though nor a good skill user so if you're more into that style I would recommend starting rogue and working towards shadow dancer or assassin classes. If you're more into a cleric/paladin style character make a drow cleric, Lolth or Eilistrae have the best domains in my opinion... blah blah blah I could talk about dungeons and dragons and Faerun all day...
