But the server [an ordinary frankenputer, nothing too fancy] ran fine with 6 players, and the server itself was running an instance of minecraft

Is that in game money, or real money you have to pay?
Well I use real money to buy in game money (Zen). So real but it's kewl. I can spare $10 for it.

Ah. I'll see if I can get it working again. The play button disappeared from my launcher.
Yeah that usually means the files weren't downloaded properly.Plenty of people had that problem.I though they patched it though. Hmmm....

Ram is going to be your biggest bottleneck. Unless you're running it out of your home internet connection, then bandwidth. It's actually incredibly light on the cpu.I meant, is it heavy on processor, ram, bandwidth, etc.
I could run one on my VPS but it'd be limited to 2-3 players at a time with only 256MB of RAM.
