I've only ran LAN servers, so I dont know about the bandwidth

But the server [an ordinary frankenputer, nothing too fancy] ran fine with 6 players, and the server itself was running an instance of minecraft

K_N knows more about it, he's ran one

Is that in game money, or real money you have to pay?

Well I use real money to buy in game money (Zen). So real but it's kewl. I can spare $10 for it.

Ah. I'll see if I can get it working again. The play button disappeared from my launcher.

Yeah that usually means the files weren't downloaded properly.Plenty of people had that problem.I though they patched it though. Hmmm....

I meant, is it heavy on processor, ram, bandwidth, etc.

Ram is going to be your biggest bottleneck. Unless you're running it out of your home internet connection, then bandwidth. It's actually incredibly light on the cpu.

I could run one on my VPS but it'd be limited to 2-3 players at a time with only 256MB of RAM.

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Ram is cheap. It would be through my home connection more than likely though for now.

Your biggest concern would be bandwidth then. When we started going over 10 players concurrently we had to move the server to a datacenter.

Ah, not terribly efficient in data transfer then?

Not really, but when you think about it that's 128x16x16 block ids, states and lighting states per chunk, and even on low settings you're sending at least 9 chunks per user several times per second (for most people, more like 25+). And that's not even counting entities. It's just a lot of data that has to come through.

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Yeah exactly. It cant just say you're in a pre-generated zone that exists in a file on your computer.

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.
