Star Wars (Episode IV, V and VI) The later ones are good too, but not SPECTACULAR like the first ones.
The X Files: Fight the Future
Donnie Darko (thanks for reminding me Glitched)
Razor (BSG 2007 movie)
Watchmen (if it counts)
And more I can't think of right now.

I don't know if I could pick a favourite, but one that I've recently watched that I really enjoyed was Galaxy Quest. I thought it was a really cool concept and it was really funny. And there's the fact that the actor for Snape was in it,

I'd totally recommend it, especially to anyone who enjoys Star Trek and similar.

Star Wars is an automatic list topper, it did kinda sorta revolutoinize the movie industry.

I will avoid the classics, everyone knows and loves them and assumes everyone else knows and loves them.

As far as more recent movies go I like the following:

Pandorum
The Underworld Series (even though I conceived the idea of a vampire werewolf cross breed when I was ten and I am convinced they stole it from me)
Hollow man
The One
28 Days Later
Equilibrium

And finally, Battlefield Earth......just kidding, that movie is teriible. Just, terrible.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

Moon is a keeper.
Just the right amount of laughs mixed in with serious stuff and science fiction.
