It depends. I installed Linux Mint on my computer this fall because my prof told me OpenGL is a pain to get working on Windows compared to Linux. Just for browsing the internet and general work, it's no different than Windows or Mac. If you're into computers and want to have more control over what goes on under the hood, go for it. Also it's a good skill for computer related careers, I've been quizzed on Linux commands in job interviews.

It's equally good for web browsing etc, but you don't have a giant corporation trying to fuck with you. It's free, so I see no reason not to give it a shot. Mint is a really good place to start.
