You can't uninvent anything.  And the people making the future robot overlords may not know what they do when they do it.

People with the power to do these things, obviously just see the money side of it (yes making processing more effective and improving defenses with robots is great etc) but really, a weapons company isn't a weapons company to help people or make life better, drug companies only have their net market shares in mind when doing anything, so similarly, robotics companies etc want to be the first/bet at producing something that makes shitloads of money ... and maybe helps one country kill people more effectively, before the another country adopts the same technologies, then every country and underground syndicate are sporting the tech and the earth isn't a safe place to life any more (in comparison to today).

Whoa ... that's enough internet for one night.

The engineers are in it to advance science.  The people backing them financially are in it for the money (as if that even had to be said, as investors don't finance anything without an expectation of return on investment.)

Totally what I meant to say. But yeah, the actual engineers do it as a career and enjoy it (I assume), the companies aren't run by engineers though. =(

My best friend is a computer science guy.  He's working on a brilliant idea, spent the better part of his life on it actually.  When he has a prototype, I'm gonna help him run the business built around it.

He's an engineer.  He doesn't understand business very well.  When business men decry the "engineer's mindset," they're talking about flights of fancy that don't mesh with economic, financial, and/or regulatory reality.

Sweet! That's awesome man. You've got a potential great Kickstarter right there. Get in on it while  you can!

No, his business is a "Silicon Valley VC-backed to the tune of millions"-level idea.  (He hasn't gotten to that stage yet, as he doesn't have a prototype worked out, but when it goes, whoa boy.)  If his idea works like he's described it, he'll be a billionaire overnight.

My imaginative writings require a publisher willing to listen to the pitch.  That's really hard these days if you're a complete nobody.  I'm content to just keep slowly improving the stories until I get that shot.

some are.  I left a company with 40,000 people to work for a company with 60 just last May.   I thought it would be a lot better.  Truth is, it's better in some ways, and worse in others.  Better because I know the owners and things can get changed.  Worse because I know the owners and sometimes they refuse to change things. e.g. create processes for doing things.

EDIT: sorry, the point i meant to make was that the owners all actively participate in the software development process for some pretty advanced geospatial applications. they also either have a master's or phd in engineering.
