You video gamers know exactly who I'm talking about.

Some circles of nerd culture have made her a saint and patently refuse to criticize her in any way (Movie Bob and Jim Sterling of The Escapist come to mind,) some hate her bloody guts with a passion usually reserved for tyrannical and genocidal dictators.

Where do I fall? I find her as a tool for that annoying sector of the "nerd elite" (the critics and "game journalists," i.e. those who make their living on it) steeped in a certain philosophy to bring out their soapboxes for a rant criticizing the nerd community for failing to live up to their utopian expectations of what it should be (and probably never will be,) not what it is. She's not the problem, her "advocates" are.

So, where do you stand?

As a gamer, I will only say this.

I don't know who that is.

Really? The woman with the Kickstarter project about video games and feminism that caused crazy "controversy"? You completely missed that one?

I possibly heard of it at some point in time previously, and ignored it as feminist stupidity as I do with many things these days.

Anita Sarkeesian? Not ringing any bells? Really?

Man, I really didn't realize how few people in nerd culture knew who she was. I thought she was Cole MacGrath levels of inFamous with pretty much a majority of us. She might even be obscure. That's enlightening. Makes her "advocates" even bigger toolbags.

In all fairness, I don't know who Cole MacGrath is either.

Her name rings a bell only because I think the Jimquisition said something about her once. With that in mind I couldn't tell you anything about her or what caused any 'controversy'.

Of the inFamous series of games. I was trying to be clever. He's the guy with the lightning powers. The newest game in the series came out a week or two ago with a new main character.

Yes, Jim Sterling, one of her "advocates." He makes good points whenever he avoids politics. When he does indulge in politics, he tends to make an ass of himself.

I may have heard something about her and her deal a while back.

Then immediately moved on as soon as I read something about feminism and such.

It is perfectly acceptable to fear and admire a being you could not possibly understand.

I've watched one or two of her videos after I saw her TEDtalk, then watched a video by someone else who made such a great argument against Anita that I followed her.

Only I keep getting feminism/anti feminism videos now as suggestions.... annoying.

Yup. This. Was she the one who stole art for her kickstart? R/gaming blew their tits off because of that one a while back.

Her main point was to show how the system is flawed. Honestly, all the backlash she got helps demonstrate that point nicely.

Also she used gameplay footage from other sources in her YouTube videos. Guess who else does that? Everyone on YouTube ever, interesting how she specifically got singled out.

You just have to delete your viewing history on YouTube. That'll take care of the problem.

But she specifically said she needed the money to buy games to conduct research by playing them. Using footage that is not hers is implying a little bit of a lie there.

I didn't know who she was until I somehow randomly came upon on the infamous videos (I get annoyed by the damsel in distress scenario, so I decided to see what the videos were all about; I'm not a feminist). I moved on after seeing them and realized about a month later that they were extremely controversial. I don't really see the big deal.
